A September to Remember

Happy September, everyone!

We only have four more months in this year, and we need to make the most of it. Now, I'll be the first to admit that in my day job as a teacher September holds a much different meaning for me, but as we talked about last week, I've been changing a lot, and I'm proud to say that for the first time I don't have any anxiety about the start of school. Not even close to what I have had in the past. I've been trying to be more mindful and let the worry go, which I've noticed is a bit of a theme online these days.

The next year is going to be insanely busy for me at work for a variety of reasons, not to mention that I also have the sequel to The Secret About Time will be coming out in June. Sharing is caring, so here's what I'm trying to keep my head on right in all the crazy.

Subtract

If everything seems too much or isn't add up, try subtracting. Sometimes this isn't always possible, but if you're overwhelmed, consider saying no or taking a step back. There are no awards for doing everything at the same time.

Do more... of what you love

Some times it isn't how much we are doing, but what we are doing. For example, taking time out of the evening for writing is an excellent use of my time because it refills my energy levels. Also, I am a big believer in having something else to focus on. Whether it be a hobby, class, or passion project, I enjoy having something to jump to when I get frustrated and/or am procrastinating. If you follow me on Instagram, you've seen I'm an avid gardener. It's no surprise that I tend my garden the most right after writing. I love stepping outside and feeling the breeze after having my face stuck in a screen.

Sleep (and journaling)

My dear friend gave me a mindfulness journal the other day, and by completing it every day, I am tracking my moods, but also my sleep. The results surprised me. As someone who usually is pretty self-aware, noticing my anxiety spiked if I slept less than seven hours was eye-opening. I wouldn't have realized that without the daily habit of journaling. I like this one because it is quick.

Take care of your body

I've lost ten pounds. More to go, but I feel pretty good. You can do it. I believe in you. I like My Fitness Pal and Weight Watchers more than exercise, but we're all different, and there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Take care of your mind

Meditation, grounding, prayer, and yoga overlap. Find one that makes you feel better and practice it regularly. I like all four and have practiced each at various points, some even in tandem. I also started going to a new church at a secluded convent in the country near my house. That's grounds for a novel right there, am I right?

I hope these next four months are a time of peace and growth for you. I'll still be here plugging away, trying to follow my own advice. :)

Onward,

Kathryn
